                    "transcription": "The loom with true healds.  This type of loom is better adapted for rapid work than the more primitive form with loop-healds.  The place of the loops and their rod is taken by a frame across which pass perforated bars, or pairs of interlocking loops, by means of which the warp strands may be raised or lowered in sets.  Even in plain weaving the loom usually has a pair of healds.  The trud heald is an old world invention, and is scarcely to be found outside civilized regions; it has been adopted, however, by a few West African tribes, and by some North American Indians.  The old handlooms of Europe, not yet quite obsolete gave rise to modern weaving machines, such as the power-loom, but for many kinds of work the healds have given way to appliances, which are better adapted for the production of complex designes."
