The basic shape of those known as tahi was a U-shape that widened towards its lowest central point. This shape below the head worked in conjunction with a radial feather headdress above to frame the face of the haka\u2018iki in an oval 'halo' of ornamentation. At a basic level, this framing of the head reflected the wider view of Pacific peoples that the head is the most tapu (taboo, sacred) part of the body. \n\nOn another level, and alongside the human face, U-shaped motifs dominated decorative wood engraving and tattooing in the Marquesas, where they were known by the name of ipu (\u2018container, skull\u2019). In this way, the tahi was a double symbol of the chief\u2019s sacredness and mana (effective life force coming from the ancestors). Like the human hair pom-poms that were also attached to the ends of chiefly staffs of office in the Marquesas, the hair for this tahi is likely to have come from one or more enemies slain in warfare.
