The Citapati are normally depicted in pairs (male and female). It is said that they were Buddhist ascetics, who were so deep in their meditation, that they were surprised by a robber and beheaded. In art and in dance, they represent the eternal dance of death, and perfect awareness. \n\nIn cham the Dance of the Lords of the Cemetery is performed in an arena representing a charnel ground.
