            "value": "Amida Buddha figure, Japan\nMuseum number nn4297\n\nThis Buddha figure was probably part of Frederick Horniman\u2019s private collection, which became the original collection of the Horniman Museum. Although he did travel to Japan, Frederick Horniman probably bought this figure from an auction or another collector.\n\nThe statue represents the Buddha Amitabha, called Amida in Japan. Japanese Buddhists follow the Mahayana branch of Buddhism, known as the \u2018Great Vehicle\u2019. Mahayana Buddhists believe many buddhas are in existence at the same time. Amida is the Buddha of the West and presides over the Western Paradise. He is also the principal Buddha of the Pure Land sect, whose adherents believe that enlightenment is gained through devotion to Amida.\n\nImages of the Buddha have distinct physical characteristics, including the elongated earlobes, the protrusion on the head indicating enlightenment, the mark on the forehead, and the monastic robes. The hand gestures, or mudra, are especially significant in Mahayana Buddhism. Amida is usually shown in meditation, with his hands in his lap. Buddha statues are generally gilded, as the historic Buddha was believed to have had golden skin, a sign that he would become a great spiritual leader. Amida sits on a lotus flower, symbol of his divine birth and total purity, and is surrounded by an aureole of clouds.\n\nThis statue would have originally been displayed in a temple shrine. Amida is grouped with two Bodhisattvas, saints who have attained enlightenment but strive to relieve suffering before entering nirvana and attaining buddhahood."
