            "value": "This sculpted panel is convex in plan (probably part of the votive adornment of a stupa base), in the typical grey schist of most Gandharan Buddhist sculpture, depicting two main scenes, each separated by single male nude standing under what look like bunches of palm leaves. \n\nThe right hand scene shows a Buddha-like individual, with a flat turban, in the middle, with a \u2018human\u2019 figure on his left. This latter individual has no halo and exhibits all the typical signs of a bodhisattva, a crested turban with a high usnisha, heavy ear ornaments, moustache and necklace. To the proper right of the Buddha stand a pair of women with flat head coverings and seated on the ground is a male with beard (a brahmin?) tending the ceremonial fire with a fan, near a pair of pots (for ritual water). The woman closest to the Buddha has taken his hand. This scene is likely to be the marriage of Prince Siddhartha and his wife (see Zwalf 1996). Is the bodhisattva on the right the Prince and the figure in the middle a Brahmin about to conduct the ceremony?\n\nThe left hand scene consists of two women seated on a high stool or bed (charpoy) covered with draperies, behind them are hanging draperies, to their proper left stands what appears to be a serving woman and on the ground to their proper right sits another servant or dwarf, now much damaged. In narrative terms the two women, in both scenes, are likely to be the same individuals, with possibly the two on the left the Bodhisattva\u2019s bride and her companion waiting for the wedding ceremony.\n\nGandharan style sculpture, circa 1st or 2nd century.\n\nThere is no find spot, beyond a general attribution to the Gandharan world, (or generally to the modern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa) or archaeological context known for this piece, and no apparent way of tracing this information beyond the fact that it is inscribed in black crayon with the number '10'.  Other pieces in this collection are similarly inscribed in black with other numbers, forming a kind of broken sequence and so an indication of a relationship with each other (both in provenance and acquisition terms)."
