            "value": "Canoe bailer, Tiheru, New Zealand Maori\n\nThe tiheru canoe bailer is one of the classic forms of the Maori carver\u2019s art, and this example illustrates that well. Even the best ocean-going boats take in some water if they have no deck, and the Maori waka was no exception. To scoop this water from the boat, the sailor used a wooden bailer (tiheru) of refined form and elaborate decoration.\nHere, fine sculpture representing the human form and face in contorted abstraction is seamlessly married to the functional efficiency of a necessary tool. As well as the bird-like manaia figure carved on the end of the handle, the base of the handle represents another face, with the similarly beaked lip and eyes of a manaia figure, such as we see on many other woodcarvings (whakairo rakau). Here, however, its facial features are exploded into discrete artistic elements and set against empty space in a masterly manner.\n\nHardwood. Early 19th Century. Provenance unknown."
