            "value": "This mask is one of my favourite objects in the museum, mainly because it has such a lot of character! It is also interesting from a Conservation point of view. It was made by the Ogoni people of Nigeria from carved and painted wood.  The lower jaw is hinged, and the mouth opens to reveal lots of white teeth made from cane. The fringe of the mask is made from an unravelled plastic feed sack- an interesting example of modern materials being used instead of the traditional raffia.  When the mask arrived in the museum, it had several types of fungus growing on it- you can still see the remains on the face where the fungus has damaged the painted surface.  For that reason, we have to monitor the mask carefully in case the fungus re-grows, which is a good reason to stand in front of it and admire it."
