Professional actors were recruited to form marionette troupes and puppetry became more highly esteemed than live drama. As well as court performances there were itinerant puppet shows for the general public. These were staged outdoors on bamboo platforms. Characters could be divided into two groups; animals and humans. Animals included Buddha's horse, Kandik; a tiger, a monkey, parrots and elephants. Humans included a King, prince, princess, dancers, clowns and ogres. \n\nThe animals appeared in the first act of the performance which dramatised the beginning of the world and the humans in the second act when court dramas, moral and historical stories were performed. In Burma only string puppets are found.
