The Great Walrus Tea Party

The Great Walrus Tea Party is back and the walrus needs your help more than ever! Throw a Tea Party on Tuesday 29 June to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the opening of the Horniman and raise some much-needed funds.

From the comfort of your own home, garden or local picnic spot, gather your family and round up your friends and colleagues and raise donations for the Horniman with your Great Walrus Tea Party. Every penny will help the Horniman inspire future generations of London’s families and schoolchildren.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens have always been a wonderful resource for all of the local community.  Host a real or virtual party on 29 June to celebrate the Horniman re-opening after lockdown and its 120th birthday!

This past year has seen our Gardens play a really important role in helping people’s mental health and wellbeing. Many of you told us how much you have appreciated our outdoor space as a place to exercise, de-stress and to see your friends and family throughout the lockdowns. We’re proud to have kept our Gardens open but every day the Museum was closed meant that we lost vital income needed to help care for our animals and aquarium residents and to continue to maintain our Gardens and all our Collections.

By hosting a Great Walrus Tea Party and raising some much-needed money, you can help the Horniman to continue being there for the local community as a resource of inspiration and lifelong learning, all whilst enjoying some fabulous cakes!

Your party could have walrus-shaped cakes and ocean-themed biscuits and even some savoury seafood snacks – from fish finger sandwiches to prawn cocktail crisps. Throughout your party, simply ask your guests to make donations in return for cupcakes or party packs. Or simply ask them to donate directly on this page.

You can host your party on any day in June to suit you or celebrate with us online at home, in the Horniman Gardens, at your local park on Tuesday 29 June. On the day, the Horniman walrus will be tweeting ‘live’ from his iceberg to celebrate the Great Walrus Tea Party. There are some prizes to give away and he will be reviewing his favourite cakes, bakes and makes. To be in with a chance of winning make sure you share your pictures, tagging @HornimanMuseum and using #walrusteaparty.

Apparently, there’s a bigger icon than me living in South London, who wants your cakes and baked offerings to help raise money for the Horniman. If you love the walrus and the Horniman Museum and Gardens as much as I do, why not join in by hosting a Great Walrus Tea Party?

Bake your walrus-themed cakes and invite your friends along to have fun and raise some money. Every penny will help the Horniman inspire future generations of London’s families and school children to love and protect nature.
