George Montagu

Biography

Colonel George Montagu was a noted early ornithologist and collector. He wrote the "Ornithological Dictionary" (1802) and Supplement of 24 Plates (1813). In 1816, many of his speicmens were acquired by the British Museum. By the time Bowdler Sharpe wrote his account of the Bird Collections at the British Museum in 1906, many of his pieces had fallen apart as a result of early taxidermy techniques. The Devizes Museum holds a collection of Montagu's taxidermy instruments.
