The Enchanted Cinema: The Music of Spirit Animals

Join The Enchanted Cinema for a seasonal celebration of Day of the Dead and Halloween – Enchanted Creatures: The Music of Spirit Animals! Help them create the sound effects to animations using instruments, hands and voices in a fun, interactive workshop.

Inspired by Mexican traditions of the spirit world and the Horniman’s extraordinary collection of animals, this Halloween audiences are invited to become spirit creatures themselves.

Whether you become a bellowing walrus, a snorting alpaca or a fluttering butterfly, you’ll use hands, voices and instruments to discover your creature’s movement, rhythm and sound before joining together to create a magical orchestra.

From Mexican spirit tales and magical animals to humans taking animal form, we’ll explore stories from around the world, including the Wizards’ Battle from Lotte Reiniger’s 100 year old classic The Adventures of Prince Achmed, where wizards transform into a scorpion, cockerel, dragon and condor.

Using instruments from around the world, audiences bring each creature to life through rhythm, music and ingenious sound effects.

Come dressed as your favourite spirit creature and join us for a magical Halloween adventure. For ages 5+. Please keep phones tucked away so we can make the magic together.

Supported by the BFI, awarding National Lottery funding through the Audience Projects Fund.
