

茶碗, chawan/te-oan. Small tea bowl with curved sides, low foot and slightly recessed base. The body is a made of a coarse dark brown stoneware. The bowl is covered with an iron glaze, which is underfired to matt to low lustre greyish colour. Glazing ends above the foot. Tea bowls of this type were made in Fujian province of South China from the 10th - 14th century.
