A single mandarin square, or rank badge, 'buzi', with an embroidered bird applied to a brown satin ground, made of two pieces sewn together along the middle, and thus from the front of a court surcoat. A peacock is depicted, the emblem of rank of a civil official of the third rank. The bird has clearly defined green, pink and yellow tail feathers, blue, white and pale purple wings, and red beak and legs. It is standing on a rock in the sea, facing a red sun in the top right hand corner. The sun is made from a concentric ring of coral beads and gold-coloured metal-wrapped thread. The bird is surrounded by the cloud and thunder pattern, worked in shades of blue and various symbols of good fortune, including two fish, a parasol, an endless knot, and the wheel of the law. The imagery is framed with a fret pattern interlinked with the sacred fungus motif. The square is lined with a stained blue/green tabby woven silk.
