Bamboo Kanowit basket and lid. The basket has a square base, and is reinforced with red-stained uprights at each corner and a double rim of rattan cane around the upper part of the basket. These uprights and canes are bound with narrow strips of natural-coloured bamboo at intervals. The lid has a similar double rim of rattan cane, and uprights from each corner which cross over the top of the lid. The main body of the basket has a diagonal twill weave and geometrical patterning in red and black against a natural ground. A twined strap of undyed fibre is attached to the back of the basket for carrying, and has become detached at one side.
These objects are only a part of our collections, of which there are more than 350,000 objects. This information comes from our collections database. Some of this is incomplete and there may be errors. This part of the website is also still under construction, so there may be some fields repeated or incorrectly formatted information.
The database sometimes uses language taken from historical documents to help research, which may now appear outdated and even offensive. The database also includes information on objects that are considered secret or sacred by some communities.
