book (documentary artefacts)

Printed picture book of everyday occupations, pastimes and customs, illustrated with coloured woodblock prints, in a dark blue sewn cover. On the outer cover is: 'SYOSYUKU-JINBUTU-GAHU' (Illustrated book of some work figures). At the front is a contents page, which gives Bunjyodo as the publishers. The last page is an advertisement for the Yukodo publishing company of Kyoto. A note found inside, in copperplate, reads: 'Brought home by one of the staff of H.M.S. Challenger from Japan'.
