Illustrated book in a dark blue, sewn cover, with very worn edges. The title is 'Hokusai Manga. Volume 6.' (i.e. an illustrated book of wood block prints by the artist Hokusai). It is a manga, or picture book, showing martial arts and arms including archery, equestrianism, spearplay, swordplay, gun shooting and so on. It was published by Toshiro Eirakuya in Nagoya. The red pigment added to the prints has faded. A note found inside, in copperplate, reads: 'Brought home by one of the staff of H.M.S. Challenger from Japan'.
