Medi/Bobohaidar

Final product; culmination of stages of manufacture of glove puppet (see 2001.195.1 - .10). Finished puppet . Puppet is an old man with white eyebrows, moustache and beard; a red nose and rosy cheeks. He is wearing a black-blue, pointed hat which is embroidered with wire at its base with red, yellow and white crosses on the black ground. He also wears a neck band in white and blue and a brown, white and black stripey robe which is trimmed with blue, white and red embroidery at the front opening and cuffs.

The puppet character is based on a well-known local, living actor going by the names of Bobohaidar and/or Medi. Bobohaidar/Medi was a popular clown, puppeteer and musician, locally famous, who often entertained important visitors and delegations in Bukhara.
