shawl; shoulder cloth; textile

A long rectangular yellow cotton shawl or 'selendang' with thin, applied fringing. It has a repeating circular motif containing a peacock, surrounded by stylised animals, including a deer and an elephant. The imagery is created by stamping a brown dye onto the yellow ground. This textile imitates similar cloths, worked in batik, made in silk from Juana on the north coast of Java.
