outercoat; textile

Large, natural-coloured felted wool coat. It is made from narrow widths of cloth and embroidered on the collar, cuffs and around the hem, including the centre back. A deep red piece of leather with a scalloped edge and punched holes is sewn either side of the neck opening and leather trim extends round the neck edge. Both the collar, sleeves and hem are decorated with floral motifs and rows of felted dots, in red, orange and green commercially made applied felt. The hem also has two bands of criss-cross embroidered patterning and a commerically made black braid is applied to the hem. The coat is fastened with a large ornate frog, comprising a Celtic style knot, whipped cords and a large toggle.
