dress; textile

Cream-coloured, double-layered cotton dress decorated with multicoloured embroidered and woven artificial (?) silk bands. The garment has been sewn together along the selvedges of each of the 2 textile length, leaving an opening for the neck. The outer selvedges have each been sewn together leaving gaps for the arms. The fabric is gathered at the waist with a white band of synthetic (?) damask, ending in a tie on the left. The green and orange patterned woven band occurs only above the back hem of the outer layer. On the inner layer a section has been sewn on decorated only with a plain orange band. The red, yellow, violet, green and black embroidered band around the neck extend to a point at the front. Below this is a 'beaded' chain-like pattern decorated with cruciform motifs and foliate sprays. The narrower, short band extending from the centre of the neckline down the back also ends in a cruciform knot. Either side of the neck-band at the height of the press stud fastening are 2 further small cruciform motifs.
