sheath (weapons: accessories); sword

A Japanese short sword and scabbard. The sword is a silver coloured metal blade set in a metal and bone handle. The hilt is decorated with an etching of two people, zig zags and lines. It has a metal end, with a circular design on both sides. The scabbard is lined with blue velvet. It is decorated in the same way as the handle (carved bone). On the scabbard, three metal rings separate three designs. The first two metal rings have hooks onto which a chain can be attached. There is a metal casing at the very end of the scabbard.

These objects are only a part of our collections, of which there are more than 350,000 objects. This information comes from our collections database. Some of this is incomplete and there may be errors. This part of the website is also still under construction, so there may be some fields repeated or incorrectly formatted information.

The database sometimes uses language taken from historical documents to help research, which may now appear outdated and even offensive. The database also includes information on objects that are considered secret or sacred by some communities.
