shadow puppet

Shadow puppet of Erawan, made of carved and painted leather. Erawan is said to be made from water and cloud. His legs are sturdy and his long hair is in the style known as apit urang, or pinching shrimp, with a garuda mungkur. The flesh parts are painted very pale pink and he has the narrow eyes and nose and delicate mouth typical of a refined, or halus, character. Irawan is the son of Pandava prince Arjuna (one of the main heroes of the Mahabharata) and the Naga princess Ulupi. He dies a heroic death in the Kurukshetra War.
