mask (dance & live theatre)

Wayang wong mask, tapel, depicting Sita. Mask carved from pule wood, face painted cream with black, red and gold detailing, around nose, eyes and arched eyebrows. Artificial gemstone in gold-painted setting above the nose. Mouth has small even teeth of shell in the upper jaw, the lips painted red; aperture below small almond-shaped eyes. Ears not indicated. Band of floral decoration in gold and black painted across brow. Headdress of carved and painted leather with blue-topped coronet at the front and garuda figure projecting at rear. At the rear of the head is an upward and inward curving projection painted black and gold. Pompom of red wool fixed to either side of the mask at brow level. The headdress is lined in black cloth. Hook for hanging at rear top. Signed by the maker on the inside.
