hat (clothing: headwear)

A circular sun hat decorated with beadwork, Sabah, Malaysia. Formed of ten sections of leaf arranged in a large circle and stitched together with thread to form the brim. Beneath this is attached a band of twill-woven basketry formed into a circular cap, partially covered with blue cloth; this fits over the wearer's head. The outer edge of the brim has been strengthened with a length of bamboo to which it is bound with string. The upper surface is covered with cream canvas, with a band of applied pieces of cltoh around the edge in alternating strips of blue and red between which are narrow stripes in red, white and blue. The main central area is dominated by a piece of applied red cloth cut into a curvilinear design, edged with alternating groups of black and white beads, with at the centre an eight-pointed star-shaped beadwork element in red, white, yellow and blue, edged with short beadwork tassels, and with a longer central tassel or red, white, black, green, yellow and orange beads.
