Circular straw hat made of a strip of plaited straw coiled and stitched together. Very small raised crown with rim of black ribbon. Flowers embroidered in wool on the wide brim, with some yellow pipe-cleaner elements. Border of black ribbon. Two lengths of black ribbon to secure, as well as a length of perished black elastic. Part of girl’s national costume of Monaco.

Was purchased in Monaco for the donor’s grandmother, as a child and worn by her in Monaco at national ceremonies. Donor’s grandmother was born in 1901. The costume is believed to date from around 1910.
