A model palanquin, katakago, Japan. It is lacquered black on the inside, and red with gold detailing on the outer surface. It has a curved roof with a horizontal bar along the top, for carrying. The Paulownia mon or crest on the roof is associated with the Tokugawa family. There is a blue and white tasselled cord wrapped around the bar. The main part of the base is rectangular, and the sides slope outwards towards the bottom.
