It is made from thinly hammered brass, with a rectangular embossed handle, depicting a stylised crocodile or lizard. It would have been kept alongside a set of items used in gold dust transactions, including scales, a brass scoop, a spoon, a stone for checking the purity of the gold, a chicken feather for collecting finer dust, and a selection of weights.
