writing set container

Writing set case. Rectangular case of white silk edged with blue and white trimming, couched metal thread and lined with pink cotton. The case is embroidered on one side in multicoloured silk thread with a crane perched on a pine tree, an insect flying above and grass and floral spray below. The other side is embroidered in black silk thread with Chinese characters of a biblical text from a chapter of Proverbs in the Old Testament. A cap is connected to the case by green silk cords which pass through the cap and are tied above it with a red button knot and a green plaited butterfly knot. The cords end at the top with a loop for suspending from the wearer's costume. A green plaited butterfly knot hangs from the bottom of the case. The cap is made of blue silk edged with green and cream trimming and couched metal thread, couched in metal thread with an endless knot design on either side. The cap is lined with pink cotton.

Collected by Rev. R.T. Davidson, who comments that a teacher wore the brush holder.
