incense burner

Part of a metal incense burner or koro in two parts. Made or collected in Japan, dating possibly to the nineteenth-century. Overall, the burner resembles a dragon fish with an open mouth to receive incense and scales around the body. This section resembles the body of the fish. On the body there are four fins, two on each side, back and front. The front fins are larger and provide stability to the object. At the back is a forked tail.
