adze (hunting, fishing & trapping)

An adze from the Andaman Islands. The handle is a short length of wood which ends in a natural hook which has been flattened on the top. Onto this lies a flat piece of shell which is covered in leaves and secured onto the wood by a strip of vegetable fibre that is tied around the shell and the hook of the wooden handle.

These objects are only a part of our collections, of which there are more than 350,000 objects. This information comes from our collections database.
