skirt; shawl; textile

Rectangular twill-woven wool textile with a brown ground and coloured bands in red, yellow, blue, and cream. According to accompanying documentation the textile (sewn together from 2 narrower pieces) was used as a woman's skirt cloth or as a scarf. The textile is decorated by changes in the twill pattern used, as well as the use of contrasting coloured weft. The division between the sections woven in lozenge or in chevron twill is marked by a cream supplementary weft-patterned band containing alternating diamond and X-shaped motifs. The coloured patterning consists of a wide centre band framed by bands of varying width. In the centre band the coloured patterning visually becomes the ground for the centre stepped lozenge motif and the patterned border stripe. The ovoid shapes contained within the stripe are inserted in a tapestry weave. The unwoven ends of the warp create fringing at both shorter ends.
