hanging (art); textile

An oval-shaped embroidered map of Ireland, delineating its counties and surrounding waters. The 'Western Ocean', 'St Georges Channel', 'The Irish Sea', the counties' names, and 'Ireland' itself have been painted onto the cream satin ground. A ship in full sail and a small rowing boat containing two figures have been painted at the bottom of the piece. ' A Scale of 30 Miles' is marked too. The map is encircled with a meandering line of foliage. All the colours are muted: red, yellow, green, blue, cream, and black for some of the lettering. An accompanying label (written on the back of a calling card, printed "Miss Heagarty , 29, St. Martins Road, Stockwell") says it was 'worked by an Irish Lady in the year 1793'. [Textile]
