Pipe case with attached tobacco box. Box from carved wood in the form of a hollow tree trunk with a circular opening in the side, over which the carved face of Daruma with mouth open wide forms a lid. Lid opens by swinging sideways. Lower part has an inlaid ivory horizontal fly whisk (hossu) and two circular inlaid wooden motifs, one incised, one or both probably representing a drum (mokugyo). Two bent arms, one each side, are raised above the head, one with hand missing, in form of branches. The remaining hand grasps the cord with which the object is attached to the pipe holder through a round red lacquered papier mache ojime bead carved with a landscape. Holder is carved in the form of a human, with arms raised forming a circle which would enclose the pipe. Side of figure hollowed out also to accommodate pipe. Appears to be a novelty item, unused.
