Pipe case with attached tobacco pouch. More or less rectangular leather pouch decorated in green, red and gold, with embossed scenes in sections, each one giving a different story, one depicting a battlefield, another two women and two children, others an old Chinese god, a dragon, and bipedal beings with a ship and a Chinese house on the reverse. Pasted gold leaf. Also the Japanese inscription appears twice giving the name of a book 'Ekikyo Raiki' , a Chinese book used during the Edo period in Japanese education. The pipe case is in similar style and materials with the character for 'happiness' at the top and a depiction of a ship at the bottom, with a stylised landscape between including a bridge and human figures.
