snuff box; lid (containers)

Snuff box, made from a small dark horn. The bottom has been plugged with a piece of wood, decorated with 2 concentric circles, with a cross in the middle. Around the horn, just above the plug, is a cuff of blonde horn with a decorative zigzag edge. This has been secured with iron pins. There is a crack through this cuff perhaps from the shaping, which has been held together with a twisted piece of brass or copper. A small metal loop protrudes from the horn around half way up. Above this the horn has been carved with a zig-zag relief with cross hatching within it. Above this is a slim collar of blonde horn. There is a thin piece of twisted yellow metal at either side of this. The last section of horn is carved with further zig-zags and is then curved like a mouthpiece. It has a hole in the end which is plugged with a simple round peg. Snuff can be heard rattling around inside.
