kite

Painted paper fish kite, locally called a koinobori, with figure of Kintarou on the back of the fish. The fish has black and grey scales and a blue and yellow eye. There is a wooden hoop in the mouth that holds it open. The figure on the back of the fish is wearing a yellow cloth.

Kintarou is a legendary figure, a very strong boy who fights with a bear. He typically wears a harakake, a sqaure cloth tied at the back, with the first letter of his name inscribed on it. At the Boy's Festival people pray that boys will be big and strong like Kintarou.
