Basketry hat. Circular base, rising to a square shape in the lower half and a general conical shape in the top half. Made of thick broad dark cane strips woven in a vertical twill. The base reinforced on exterior with a cane band bound on by thin cane strips. Half way up interior there is a cross-brace of plaited cane strip. Exterior has one cane loop at the top and some at each side and near the bottom, through which is passed twin lengths of twisted fibre, tied together near the top (which could pass under the chin of the wearer). Attached to the side loops and passing over the top of the hat is a long piece of skin with black hair (possibly bear skin), much hair missing at one end half. The lower part of the hat on one side, probably the front, is overlaid with thinner and lighter coloured (almost yellow) twilled fibre following the underlying canework weave. 9" high.
