Box and lid in brown and black. On the bowl is a modelled and carved figure of Hotei, the god of children, one of the seven lucky gods. He is accompanied on the base by three children emerging from the sack he is carrying which forms the base itself. There is an inscription inside lid and on inside at bottom, reads '43' twice each time. On the lid are depictions of nine children. Pottery covered with lacquer and gold. Probably made for the export market.
