Snuff-taking (inhalation of tobacco powder) was practiced by the American Indians. It was introduced (with tobacco-smoking) into Europe in the late 16th. century and in the following century spread rapidly over Africa and Asia.
Snuff-boxes and snuff-containers are made in a great variety of forms and materials, and implements such as scoops or spoons may be used to aid snuff-taking.
