Home education

Home educated children and their families are welcome at the Horniman. We offer a dedicated home education programme including regular object handling and outdoor learning workshops, and twice-yearly home education days.

You can keep up-to-date with the programme through our home education newsletter.

  • Come along to one of our dedicated Home Education Days, held twice a year.
  • Attend one of our regular home education workshops. We offer these for a range of age groups, to ensure learners can get the most out of the sessions.
  • Visit us for your own self-led visit. You can use our learning resources and collections information to help support your learning.

The Museum’s main Galleries, Gardens and Animal Walk are free to visit, and there is plenty for families to see and do for free. You can find out more about our spaces on our Around the Horniman webpages.

Educational rate tickets for our Aquarium, Butterfly House and charged-for exhibitions are available for home educated children aged 5 – 18 years old. Please note that these are only available from Monday to Friday during term time, from 10.00 am to 3.00pm. You can book these tickets at the Ticket Desk.

Use our learning resources and collections to explore a range of fascinating topics, from ancient history to habitats, to musical instruments. Our resources can also be used flexibly, so can create your own activities, projects and learning materials too.

There are lots of ways you can use the resources and collection:

  • Encourage independent research: select three objects to explore in detail and create a fact file.
  • Download the pictures and text to create and give a presentation on your chosen topic.
  • Develop investigation and deduction skills by identifying ‘mystery’ objects.
  • Create a sketchbook of your favourite Museum objects.
  • Curate a mini-museum in a box. Print, draw or sculpt objects from the Horniman’s collection, research and write information labels, then design your own museum trail.

We ask that any organised educational group (including home education groups) book their visit with us. If you are bringing an organised home education group for a self-led visit, please get in touch: schools@horniman.ac.uk

Organised home education groups can book workshops exclusively for their groups. These are charged at our schools rates. We have a minimum and maximum number of children who can attend these sessions. If you would like to discuss booking one of these workshops, please contact the Schools team on schools@horniman.ac.uk or 020 8291 8686.
