112.13 Vessel rattles

Pair of brass anklet pellet bells, containing rattling pellets, and with a punched design on one side. 'Dagara' in Soara language, 'Gabgalum' in Oriya.

Purchased from Konchada Someswara Rao, a metal merchant in Parlakhemundi, Gajapati dist 761200, Odisha, India, in November 2003. The anklets are worn by Sora women during dance performances. They are cast using the lost wax (cire perdue) process.
