

Śahnāī, shahnai: Conical wooden body stained red and varnished. Seven round fingerholes follow a line slightly offset to the player's right. No thumbhole. A long black cord tied to the body below the fingerholes terminates in two green tassels. Tenon at bottom of body attaches bell, although lapping is missing. Bell is of white metal and has a curved flare. A lateral groove is cut near top of body, which is unvarnished inside. Top of body is domed and surmounted with a brass staple, which has gold thread around the base and is secured in place.
