box (containers); lid (containers)

A box and lid made of grey, carved soapstone. The base is hexafoil in shape, with a triangular point between each arc. The base has six feet, which are also made of soapstone. The sides of the box are formed of curved pieces of soapstone with many diamond shapes cut from them to form a pattern resembling a mesh. Towards the centre of the object the stone is carved into a six-pointed star shape, so that the view from above shows a six-pointed star with the curved arcs which form the sides between the star's points. The lid is also hexafoil in shape and is elaborately carved, with a six-pointed star around a central handle in the shape of a flower. The entire surface of the lid is carved with various intricate patterns.

Label: two old labels (possibly exhibition labels) found with the object.
