The Horniman Museum will be closed from 24-26 December. The Horniman Gardens will be closed 25 December only.
Large wooden mortar carved from a solid piece of wood with decorative alcoves and multiple brass pins. The eight decorative alcoves are carved around the outside and are decorated with brass pins. The mortar is carved circumferentially with two lines of zigzags at the bottom and at the top. There are thirteen brass pins at the top, hammered flat so as to represent flowers. The top aspect is decorated with seven semicircular designs of embossed flowers.
These objects are only a part of our collections, of which there are more than 350,000 objects. This information comes from our collections database.
