Dish made from Totara bark (Podocarpus totara) used by ancient Maoris for catching pigeons, the dish being filled with water and set in the branches of a tall tree. The pigeons were enticed by the water and after drinking were captured by a spear which was let loose by the natives. (see Trans.N.Z. Inst., Vol 24, 1891, p451).
