Curved piece of steel used with a small piece of flint. Also a small quantity of lighting material: cotton yarn and straw.
Item number 60 on Jeremy Keenan's item list. Flint ('tafarast') and steel ('énefed'). Keenan acquired this object from Musa of the Kel Hirafok people. Price paid: 15 dinar. Keenan refers to fig 198 in Johannes Nicolaisen's 'Ecology and culture of the pastoral Tuareg, with particular reference to the Tuareg of Ahaggar and Ayr' (Nicolaisen, 1963, p 256, fig 198).
