Beaded Luo belt, composed of four horizontal sections with tightly wound beadwork. Together these make up nine vertical sections of geometric design in red, yellow, blue and green beadwork, interspersed by white.
Heavy Luo beaded belts such as this example were traditionally made by skilled craftswomen using expensive imported beads aquired on the coast and bought to Kamba areas by traders often in exchange for ghee, or clarified butter. They would be worn by women during ceremonial occasions, particularly in performing dances, as a display of wealth.
