drum head

Membrane (local name 'tugal') or drumhead for valanthala (bass) side of chenda (cenda) drum, with hoop. Ox or cow skin.

The leather hides are provided by a traditional craftsman, kollan or tolkollan, who specialises in producing drum skins. The kollan will apply up to three layers. Later, the drummer may add a further two or more depending on his preferred quality of sound.
