Schoolmaster marionette or doll with a head, forearms and boots of earthenware and decorated with paint. The figure is wearing a light blue, pattern-woven, cloth tunic over a white vest and blue silk trousers tied above the boots with a plaited cord. The silk, indigo-dyed coat has round yellow bead fasteners and a strip of multi-coloured material sewn on either side of the central front opening. The face has a goatee and moustache and a pair of white metal glasses. The figure is wearing a round, black hat with red cord trimmings, and a single plait at the back, made of human hair.

Collected by the donor's aunt, who was a medical missionary in China for over fifty years.
