Kitchen God

Painting of the Kitchen God, Chao Shen, and his wife and five additional figures (two either side and one in the background). Painted in colour, especially red, green and yellow, on white card.

Usually such depictions of the Kitchen God were pasted up over the stove in homes. He was supposed to note down good and bad deeds of the family and report to heaven at New Year.

Some of this is incomplete and there may be errors. This part of the website is also still under construction, so there may be some fields repeated or incorrectly formatted information.

The database sometimes uses language taken from historical documents to help research, which may now appear outdated and even offensive. The database also includes information on objects that are considered secret or sacred by some communities.
